The steps for performing a breast self-exam (BSE) are as follows:
1. Stand in front of a mirror and look at your breasts. Look for any changes in size, shape, or contour, as well as changes in the skin such as redness or dimpling.
2. Raise your arms above your head and look for any changes or asymmetry.
3. Use the pads of your fingers to gently feel your breasts, starting at the outside and moving in towards the nipple. Use a circular motion and cover the entire breast.
4. Lie down and place a pillow under your right shoulder. Use the pads of your fingers to gently feel your right breast, starting at the outside and moving in towards the nipple. Use a circular motion and cover the entire breast. Repeat on the left breast.
5. Finally, feel your breasts while you are in the shower, using the same circular motion and covering the entire breast.
It’s important to repeat the process once a month, ideally around the same time of the month, for example, after the menstrual cycle. If any changes are detected during a BSE, it is important to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
